A letra expressa algumas preocupações da banda com o mundo e com a própria situação da banda.

"A nuclear error, but I have no fear
London is drowning-and I live by the river"

A referencia de um erro nuclear refere-se a um acidente ocorrido em Three Mile Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile_Island_accident)

O verso "London is drowning and I live by the river" mostra a preocupação de que o Rio Thames inundasse a capital inglesa.

A violencia social também é abordada na música, com o verso "We ain't got no swing 'Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing".

A música é até um pouco obscura, tem um clima sombrio, que é sustentado pelos gritos desesperados de Strummer no final da música, que mais parecem ter vindo do filme Planeta dos Macacos e suas letras apocalípticas.

O valor da banda The Clash para a música é inegável e London Calling, talvez a sua obra prima, faz jus a fama da banda, que foi considerada uma das melhores do mundo em sua época.
